The First SACReD Congregation!
Unitarian Universalist Church of Sarasota
On Sunday November 9, Rev. Angela Tyler-Williams, SACReD’s Co-Director for Movement Building celebrated Unitarian Universalist Church of Sarasota as the first designated SACReD Congregation in the United States! SACReD congregations are committed to creating “a world where Reproductive Justice is a lived reality. They affirm bodily autonomy and moral agency, celebrate healthy sexuality, and advocate for reproductive dignity to support the flourishing of all people and families.”
Kate Lannamann accepted the plaque on behalf of UU Sarasota. (Kate and Angela are pictured here with the plaque, in front of the pulpit at UU Sarasota.)
“The anti-abortion faith message has drowned out the majority of faithful Americans who support the right to access safe and legal abortion. Just as the faith community helped to change hearts and minds about civil rights and same-sex marriage, the faith community is essential in changing the narrative and developing support for reproductive justice, including abortion,” states Ms. Lannamann.
Kate served as a member of the SACReD Interim Steering Committee for several years, is the President & Director of the Florida Interfaith Coalition for Reproductive Health, and continues to establish a network of SACReD congregations in Florida. The UU of Sarasota, the largest Unitarian Universalist congregation in the State of Florida, is a strong place to start.
Three leaders (one clergy, two laity) from UU Sarasota attended SACReD trainings and led the congregation through the SACReD Curriculum last spring. As a result of the training the Reproductive Justice Action Team was established and that team brought a resolution to accept SACReD’s Designation Affirmations to the UU Sarasota Board of Trustees in April 2023. Currently, the congregation’s Reproductive Justice Action Team, is working on obtaining petition signatures for the ballot initiative, “Amendment to Limit Government Interference with Abortion.”
Are you ready to become a SACReD Congregation? Sign up for December’s SACReD Curriculum Facilitator Training!
Join our Final Facilitator Training of 2023!
This training equips participants with the knowledge, frameworks, and practices to lead a congregation or community through the SACReD Curriculum. This training is geared toward congregational leaders (clergy and laity) who help shape the educational formation within congregations. Learn how to lead your congregation through courageous conversations weaving together our faith and reproductive stories.
The SACReD Curriculum is for congregations and communities seeking to explore and deepen their commitments to faith-based reproductive dignity for all.
SACReD in Action
When the devastating events of October 7th first occurred SACReD leaned into our values and tended to our beloved community. We reached in to two of our directly impacted partners and invited them to collaborate with us in crafting a statement. We are deeply thankful to National Council of Jewish Women and HEART for saying yes to this process with us and we pray that we can continue to find our way forward together.
We are excited to announce the newest member of the SACReD Team, Rev. Lyndsey Godwin (she/they), Program Operations Coordinator!!
